The Thurgood Marshall Center Trust, Inc. is celebrating the unveiling of the Cornerstone Time Capsule, which was laid by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908 containing a Time Capsule (tin box) with contents to be revealed on the day of the event. Included in the tin box is a Bible, a copy of the President’s speech, copies of the local newspapers containing the advance notices of the cornerstone laying, literature of the African American Men’s Department of the Association, and a YMCA button. Speakers at the ceremony, including Roosevelt, called the work of the Y “a monument to the advancement of the city of Washington”.
In addition, we will honor “Phenomenal Men 2009”, to include President-Elect Barack H. Obama, Marion Barry, District of Columbia Council Member, Ward Eight, Reverend Walter E. Fauntroy, Donald M.Temple, Esq., Thomas B. Hargrave, Jr. and Ibrahim C. Mumin. As a challenge to law firms, corporations, philanthropists, and businesses, we offer sponsorships that include the opportunity to place an item in the new time capsule for the next 100 years.
The Thurgood Marshall Center for Service and Heritage is located in Washington’s Shaw community, a historic preservation site, honored in 1999 by President and Mrs. William Jefferson Clinton as a National Treasure. Currently, eight non-profit organizations are housed under its co-location umbrella, all serving children, youth, and families in service and heritage.
