The intimate concert to mark the release of his latest CD was very much the rage, as new and loyal fans alike witnessed Mayer’s songwriting and guitar playing in the intimate venue of the Williamsburg Music Hall. Happy to hear Mayer sing many of their favorites-the show lasted a good two(2) hours with the encore performance. John played songs from his new record including,Heartbreak Warfare a surrealistic account of the fight with emotions that can tear two hearts apart. Other songs on the new record included a soulful rhythm and bluesy Perfectly Lonely, Edge of Desire, etc.

He also played songs from Continum, Room for Squares and Heavier Things,Try including Vultures,Gravity and Waiting On the World to Change, I Don’t Trust Myself with Loving You, Belief, etc. The crowd was pleased and from all observations wanted the concert to last all night. More to come soon, including photos and clips.

Since John is performing a free concert tomorrow in Williamsburg Brooklyn and his special live TV concert on Fuse Tuesday night, November 17, 2009 on the cusp of a new CD release,Battle Studies and a Winter Tour, he must not only be feeling happy ,but that he is as the song goes,”workin’ day and night” as well.

As Michael Jackson’s song Got Me Workin’ Day and Night begins the segment,it puts you in the mood for busy times. Even though as John jokingly laments, its the kind of thing that makes a man want to open the studio door just so he can shut it back down again. I’m sure that’s the dry wit comic in him speaking. When you make the kind of music he does, the studio is always a good place to be.

As far as a heavy work load, I know the feeling…of course, from a different aspect. So,I’m lifting John up today with encouragement. … take it away as the spotlight shines on his DJ prowess in this first segment of a colorful series of live broadcasts created especially for his fans.

The Playlist

1. Got Me Workin Day and Night-Michael Jackson

2. Want to Have a Good Time? John’s comedy interlude and humorous take on 70′

Blackploitation movies.

2. Spank Rock-Tell Me what it Look Like,Tell Me what It Is

3. J azz Interlude

4. Ride Like the Wind-Christopher Cross

5. ABC (outro)-Jackson Five

All in all a thought provoking blend of musical genres. One you would not expect. It makes for a good conversation piece, while also providing another glimpse into a complex singer-songwriter’s soul. Goes well with sunday brunch.

Heavier Octaves gives a shout out to Michael, as his tremendous energy and showmanship is celebrated in the documentary film highlighting his last concert effort, “This Is It”. This Is It was a planned series of 50 concerts to be held at The O2 arena in London. They were scheduled to begin in July 2009 and continue through March 2010. Less than three weeks before the first show was due to begin and with all concerts being sold out, Jackson died after suffering cardiac arrest. For more about the concerts, click here. The CD is available now and you can listen to the song, “This Is It”, in the right hand margin of this page. The song is infectious… takes you back to the old school Jackson Five days.

Michael, we love you and appreciate your generous spirit.

With the bulk of Jackson’s estate going to his mother Katherine Jackson and his children, the remaining twenty percent of Michael’s estate is being donated to unspecified charities. We do know that Michael made the Guinness Book of World Records in 2000 for pop star supporting the most charities. A song he co-wrote with Lionel Richie, titled “We Are the World,” sold 20 million copies and generated millions of dollars for global famine relief. According to a USA Today article, Jackson supported a variety of individual organizations as well, including the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the American Cancer Society.

By the way, if you have any “This Is It” movie or song reviews to share, we invite you to post them in the comment section below. If you have already posted one to your blog or on another website you are welcome to share an excerpt or link in the comment section as well.

To borrow a line from John’s new single,”Who Says?” brewing up a subtle controversy all its own on a rather hot topic these days… Who says you can’t be free? If you don’t know what I am talking about then take a close listen to the lyrics next time you spin the song.

This is part 3 of John’s first online radio show which was broadcast back in August. It lasts little over an hour,1:01:28, to be exact and seems to be liberating for the gifted singer-songwriter guitar player. There are some real treasures to be found here, a few have been hidden in the broadcast if you are listening for the obvious. If your keen is on keen, you will easily tune in, no worries. And if some of the rap language offends thee on several of the tunes he mixes with self-professed difficulty lining up the beats, cover your ears, think beautiful thoughts, do good works, and then, face the multi-faceted reality known as life…

This show segment, starts out with some hip-hop flair with Dilla(hope I spelled that right) and segues into a Jay-z rap song filled with a signature blend of smooth and jaded lyrics, and rap beats to match which made him famous. John throws in some creative DJ mash-ups and provides a real treat to fans with some unpublished creations of his own, self-dubbed intended demos from the “failure file” or once planned “bonus tracks”.

My favorites:

Johnny Guitar Watson-”Real Mutha for Ya” Warning: some parental advisory lyrics… riddled with truth as he waxes poetic and parodies the “spirit of the times” during this economic downturn. Redemptive and definite blues anthem.

“Chicken Grease”-the name says it all. Enjoyed John’s verbal intro to this piece. May “Spanky”, a real fine guitar player, who passed away, rest in peace.

Prince’s “When Doves Cry” live performance with a guitar solo and shout out to Wendy.

John’s cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Inner City Blues”—splendid. “Gold Digga” sample and the “interview of an old blues artist.” That one is special. See if you can guess which blues artist he is interviewing.

This past Sunday, September 13, 2009 Congressman James E. Clyburn spoke to members and friends of the Florida Avenue Baptist Church at a reception following morning worship about what they could do individually and collectively as concerned citizens and Christians to make their voices heard more effectively in the fight for Health Care Reform in this country. Paraphrasing what he said:

Start writing letters and making phone calls to your elected officials/representatives. Tell your friends to do the same. Pass the word and get the message out. Let your elected representatives and those in the media know that you support the President’s Health Care Plan.

Earlier this year Clyburn introduced the Access for All Americans Act. The $26 billion sought by this Act would provide funding to quadruple the number of community health centers in the US that provide medical care to uninsured and low-income citizens.

Clyburn also delivered a sermon earlier from the pulpit citing scripture from the book of Micah 6:6-8 which reads in part:

“And what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, to love kindness,And to walk humbly with your God?…”

Courtland Milloy of the Washington Post interviewed prominent lawyers and law professors Charles Ogletree and Donald Temple on the matter of Skip Gates and racial profiling. According to Milloy, Gates should skip the blather and sue.

"Let's get serious. If Harvard professor Henry Louis "Skip" Gates believes that he has been subject to false arrest, racial profiling, harassment and public humiliation by police in Cambridge, Mass., then he should press his grievance in a court of law. " Read more

Charles Ogletree, Harvard Law Professor, friend and attorney to Gates stated:

“Right now, he’s looking forward to other constructive options: public forums on police conduct in minority communities and trying to deal with broader issues of racial profiling,” Ogletree said.

Donald Temple Washington, DC attorney who has handled many civil rights and police misconduct cases weighed in by saying:

“The problem with false arrest is cancerous in our communities,” … “Police are locking people up at will, using the charge of disorderly conduct as an opportunity to abuse people, to lock them up, instead of having meaningful exchanges with them.”

As John played the focus remained on the music of Michael Jackson. He gave a soft yet compelling jazz version of Human Nature a hauntingly beautiful song from the Thriller album, one of my favorites. The rendition left one wanting more by way of an encore of this and other songs performed during the service.

Sadly, Jackson’s untimely and sudden passing also left this, and most certainly, other fans wanting an encore performance of his life… a wish we know will not be fulfilled during this lifetime. This somber reality became even more evident at the end of the memorial service when a circle of light was left to illuminate the area surrounding the microphone, a spot on stage where Michael would have stood. It was clear at that moment Michael was indeed gone…and would not be coming back.

Farewell and rest in peace, “King of Pop”, proclaimed “World Humanitarian” later in the service by Representative Sheila Jackson-Lee on behalf of the Congressional Black Caucus. We will miss you.

On last Saturday,February 7,2009,at the Thurgood Marshall Center Trust, civil rights Attorney Donald M. Temple gave a thoughtful acceptance speech (see video below) which included reference to Platters’ song , “I Love You 1000 Times“.

Temple went on to speak of civil rights leaders and great legal minds like Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, how they dedicated their lives and professional careers to the pursuit of equal justice under the law. For all they gave of themselves he remarked “I love you a thousand times”.He also marked the occasion by recognizing Marshall’s widow Cissy with a beautiful bouquet of orange lillies.

Thurgood Marshall Center Trust,Executive Director,Thomasina Yearwood was also acknowledged by Mr. Temple with a historic photograph of Judge Spotswood Robinson and Justice Thurgood Marshall which he donated from his private collection. He stressed the importance of such community groups as Concerned Black Men which he founded and asked the current President of that organization to stand. He continued a demonstration of class that is surely the product of many years of struggle and triumph in the “legal trenches” by acknowledging his peers, the other wonderful men on the podium with whom he was sharing the honor.

Other Phenomenal Men honorees included President Barack Obama (who was not in attendance),the Honorable Rev.Walter E.Fauntroy, the Honorable Marion Barry,Councilmember,Ward 8, Ibrahim C. Mumin,President of Mumin and Associates,LLC. and Thomas B. Hargrave Jr.,President Emeritus YMCA of Metropolitan Washington.Michael C.
